Story

Message from the Emperor:

An unforeseen disaster has beset the Empire. Our only qualified sign builder has taken an Early Retirement at very short notice and sailed off for the South of Gaul, despite my pleading with him to stay on. In recognition of his many years of service I'm making arrangements right now for him to be introduced to some of the finest sharks in the Mediterranean, as part of a special Early Retirement package from the Empire. Meanwhile we don't have a replacement trained, and to train one to the required standards will take much longer than I have to spare. As you understand, these signs must be immaculately crafted in order to attract immigrants.

Nonetheless, I require a small settlement right on the major desert land trade routes, where both food and resources are non-existent, and water is likely to be scarce as well. You are to establish this settlement as quickly as you are able. This mission will represent a unique test of your governarial skills. I am able to grant you substantial starting funds so money will not be a problem, but I want you to return as much of it as you possibly can when the city is established. You can take with you all the remaining stocks of housing signs that the Empire possesses, but unfortunately that is not many.

This location will in years to come form a critical trade outpost for the Empire. Therefore you must not delay, for if you do perhaps you will be the next recipient of the Empire's special Early Retirement package.

Rules

All entries must meet the following completion criteria at the time of submission:

  • Population not less than 1,000

Winning Criteria:

  • WC1:Completion Date (earliest wins)

  • WC2: Cash in treasury. Only used if WC 1 produce a tie.

Designer's Notes:

Special Rules:

No new housing lots may be placed at any time. You must make do with the housing lots that you start with.
No overlapping houses, including houses overlapping with other structures, are allowed.
All houses in the city at all times must be of the dimensions intended by the game makers, for example Large Insulae MUST be 2x2.

It is not possible to disable housing in the map editor, so this contest relies even more than normally on the honesty of the participants. There are no requests and no invasions.

Difference between Easy and Hard:
Easy has a number of housing lots placed in the eastern corner, to make it a little easier to get started. That is the only difference between easy and hard.

Early Retirement was designed by goonsquad and tested by Naghite.

This contest will close at 11PM EDT (US), on Sunday, May 21st. Please note the date!!!!

This contest has ended.
