Story

You are to establish a city at a small province on the banks of the Fly River in the vicinity of Cyrene. The Fly is a winding watercourse so infested with insects that farming in the area is impossible. It is believed that Ceres once placed a curse on the area that has never quite lifted. Fortunately the Fly does contain fish and it is by this means that you will feed your people. I expect strong population growth, although building on the banks of the river might present you with some challenges in this regard. Nonetheless, I expect you to eventually reach the highest population possible in this province, together with moderate levels of prosperity, in order to project a strong Roman presence in this newly colonised area. You must also maintain my favour and send me a few things so I know you are going well. Understand that the Empire is in a parlous financial state and that the denarii I grant you at the start will have to suffice well into your mission. I will regard you as having failed if you require ANY more money, particularly before I have received some tribute from you.

In your early years I will judge you annually on your progress towards these goals, and eventually I will assess your end result. In order to make your task a little easier I have granted you a special starting prosperity rating of 5.

Prepare some defenses. Although the local Barbarians are not present in your province, be aware they are not far away and are more than likely to pay you a visit once they learn of your presence. Watch the health of your people, too, with all those insects about.

You will find that the sheep in the area are particularly restless, since the flies drive them completely mad. Your prefects might put a few of them out of their misery.

Now go.

Mission Details

The mission starts in January 1. This Progressive mission requires that you provide 4 saves.
- 1st save any time during Year 1.
- 2nd save any time during Year 2.
- 3rd save any time during Year 3.
- 4th save at any time the player wishes (no time limit).

Rules

Completion Criteria and Rules for all Stages:

-Save game at any time during the years specified above (for the first three stages) and at any time for the 4th stage.
- No gifts to Caesar.
- Prosperity of 5 multiplied by the number of the current year (eg in Year 5 you require 25 prosperity, in Year 10 you require 50 prosperity). An entry with maximum possible prosperity of 100 will be meet the prosperity requirement regardless of the year.
- Favour 50.
- City must not be in debt at any save.
- Each saved game must be continued into the next stage. After the first save in Year 1 is made, you MAY NOT go back to an earlier save or back to the start in order to complete later stages. This principle applies throughout the mission. Therefore when completing your Year 1 and 2 saves, you should ensure that you will have sufficient prosperity to make a valid save during the following year.
- An invalid or missing save will result in the population for that stage being regarded as 0.
- For this contest Ancient Maps Rule 1.3 (moving of flags) will not apply.
- For this contest any and all forms of overlapping housing or buildings is banned.

Judging Criteria:

Population at the time of each save.
Populations at the four saves will be added to give a total score.
Highest total score wins.
In case of a tie, population at the 4th (final) save will be used to determine a winner (highest wins).

Hard/Easy

Easy difficulty has higher starting money/top-up and (slightly) easier terrain. Easy has 1 fewer invasion and the invasions are smaller.

Prosperity & Favour

Both difficulties start with 5 prosperity and 50 favour
.
Top-Up Money

There is top-up money in this mission, but a penalty of 3 prosperity applies, even in the first year. In both difficulties, it is not possible to make a valid year 1 save subsequent to receiving the top-up. You can make your Year 1 save before receiving the top-up or do without it.

In-Game Mission Requirements

The completion requirement in game is shown as 99,000 population. This should be ignored. Completion requirements are as detailed above.
